Cee Jay Van Der Wilt Sentenced In Emmet County Murder Case

December 07, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– A man convicted of involuntary manslaughter for his role in the death of David McDowell of Estherville was sentenced today (Tues.) in Emmet County District Court. Cee Jay Van Der Wilt was sentenced to two years in prison with credit given for the nearly one year in jail he’s already served.

Judge Duane Hoffmeyer handed down the sentence after hearing a request from Van Der Wilt’s attorney for probation. The prosecuting attorney argued that Van Der Wilt should serve the maximum sentence allowed for the aggravated misdemeanor.

Victim impact statements written by McDowell’s father and sister were also read as part of today’s (Tues.) court proceedings.

Another man charged in McDowell’s death, Connor Uhde, entered an Alford plea to reduced charges of attempted murder and third degree kidnapping as part of a plea deal. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
