(Everly)– More details are being learned into last week’s abrupt resignation of the Superintendent of a financially strapped northwest Iowa school district.
Monte Montgomery abruptly resigned last week as Superintendent of the Clay Central-Everly school district. It happened shortly before a community meeting to discuss the district over-spending its budget.
Now, school board President Sue Brugman says the resignation was submitted after Montgomery was asked to verify some $25,000 in questionable charges on the school’s credit card.
In the meantime, Brugman says a thorough audit of the district’s finances is being conducted.
While it certainly isn’t helping matters any, school officials say the credit card irregularities and a $749,000 budget deficit are separate issues.
The Clay Central-Everly School District will present a plan to correct the deficit to the state’s School Budget Review Committee December 13th. The plan calls for the elimination of 6.1 non-certified staff members with 13.46 full-time equivalent certified teaching positions being eliminated. Officials say that would bring the district back to a positive balance in three years.
The district meanwhile is looking into the possibility of hiring an interim Superintendent.
