Fire danger is high across Northwest Iowa, and while burn bans are not yet in place in Dickinson County, fire officials urge caution with windy conditions in the forecast.
Local firefighters responded to a combine fire just north of the Iowa-Minnesota border on Wednesday, and Spirit Lake Fire Chief Dave Kollasch says, with the harvest underway, conditions are ripe for combine fires.
“It could be anything, just a spark off a chain could do it, especially with the wind the way that it is.”
Chief Kollasch adds that farmers are urged to take precautionary measures. “I would like to stress that farmers have tillage equipment in the fields in case a problem does arise. That does save a lot of time, especially for us.”
He notes that common sense is urged for all residents with the extremely dry and windy conditions expected this weekend.
