November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– A head-on collision Monday involving a car and a semi on Highway 18 in Palo Alto county claimed the life of an Algona man.

The Iowa State Patrol says 47-year-old Ronnie Menneke of Algona was driving a 2001 Oldsmobile westbound when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound Freightliner semi driven by 39-year-old Craig Klatt of Sheldon.

Menneke was pronounced dead at the scene. Klatt was taken to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg where he was treated and released.

Damage estimates to the vehicles weren’t immediately available.

The collision took place shortly after 7:30 a.m.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Palo Alto county ambulance, the Emmetsburg Fire Department, the Cylinder Fire Department and the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Menneke was a teacher at Emmetsburg High School.
