Car/Semi Collision Blocks Clay County Road

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A collision involving a car and a semi shut down a county road in Clay county for awhile Saturday.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 59-year-old Kathryn Jones of Spencer was driving a 2001 Cadillac Deville eastbound on County Road B-40 and had crossed the center line. Authorities say the driver of an oncoming semi tractor-trailer, 66-year-old Russel Meier of Harris, attempted to pull on the shoulder as a result. The car driven by Jones collided with the rear driver side tires of the semi trailer. The car then spun backward 90 degrees, coming to rest facing northwest, blocking the eastbound lane. The semi’s trailer slid about 320 feet to the west, partially blocking the eastbound lane and totally blocking the westbound lane.

Jones was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital and was life flighted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. There was no immediate word on a condition or extent of injuries.

$15,000 in damage was estimate to the 2001 Cadillac Deville driven by Jones; $30,000 in damage was estimated to the semi trailer owned by D & K Transportation.

The collision took place around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Royal Fire and Rescue, the Spencer Ambulance, Bud’s Service and the Clay County Roads Department.

Authorities say charges are pending in the crash.
