CAASA Vows To Re-Build It’s Facility In Downtown Spencer

July 11, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– An agency that’s used to helping people now needs help of its own as it works to recover from the flood. CAASA, the Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault, sustained about $400,000 in damage when their offices in Spencer flooded. The facility had just opened this past September. Executive Director Stephanie Henrich says it served not only victims, but also advocates, providing a place for training and privacy with clients, as well as serving as a headquarters for administrative offices…

“It was where they could come off the street and they could get help from us. And that was what the main importance of what this whole building was to us, is they could visibly see us and they could come in and get help.”

She says the facility, located in the heart of downtown Spencer on Grand Avenue, also provided a food bank and storage for the 19 counties CAASA serves. Complicating things is the fact the organization is a nonprofit with limited financial resources and no flood insurance. Even then, Henrich says they’re committed to re-building…

“We still have to take care of people. We still have to show the community we’re not going anywhere. If it takes us a while to re-build, that’s okay. But we will re-build again.”

An account for donations for CAASA’s re-building efforts has been established at Farmer’s Trust and Savings Bank in Spencer. Donations may be sent to CAASA Flood Account, Farmer’s Trust and Savings Bank, P.O. Box 7980, Spencer…51301.
