Bystanders Avert Potential Tragedy

April 17, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Officials say the quick actions of some bystanders likely prevented a tragedy this (Wednesday) morning in Spencer.

Fire Chief Jesse Coulson says crews were called shortly before 10:00 am to 1111 12th Street Southeast after getting a report of flames and smoke coming from the siding of a house. Coulson says a small fire had been burning on the exterior of the home. He says some bystanders managed to put it out by the time firefighters arrived. Firefighters investigated further and confirmed the fire had not spread to the interior of the home.

Firefighters were on the scene about 10 minutes.

The Spencer Police Department, in addition to the bystanders, assisted on the scene.
