(Spencer)– A special event this coming Sunday in Spencer is intended to bring increased public awareness to breast cancer, with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Susan Zulk of Spencer Hospital says they’ll be holding their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk…
“It’s a fun, free event. It starts at 4:00 in the hospital park. We’ll be there on hand with registration and walkers starting at 3:30. You know as people gather between that 3:30 and 4:00 they’ll have an opportunity to visit with those supporters, we’ll have a photo booth area, if they have children we’ll have a kid’s area, and then if they’re survivors we’ll want them to register with some members of our Abben Cancer Center team, because later on we’ll have just a short program, but during that program we’ll recognize survivors. Then at 4:00 we’ll have the program and then the walkers begin. They’ll go down the west side of Grand, under the bridge, back up, so.”
Zulk says the walk is intended to fill two main purposes…
“One in every eight women in the United States is at risk for being diagnosed with breast cancer. And so our goal is really two fold: one is to gather our survivors, to celebrate our survivors. We want to honor the loved ones who have lost their lives to breast cancer, and support those undergoing cancer care. And then as our title says we also want to create breast cancer awareness, and so we want to raise awareness for prevention and then detection and also the many treatment options available.”
