(Arnolds Park)– Several area businesses and atleast one governmental entity in the Iowa Great Lakes have reported receiving bogus e-mails in recent days from what’s purported to be the Internal Revenue Service.
The e-mail claims that a federal tax transaction recently sent from your bank account was returned by your bank. It then gives a link the recipient is supposed to click on to read what supposedly is a report about the transaction.
Officials say you shouldn’t click on it and simply disregard the email. IRS officials say it’s bogus and is part of a phishing scam…another attempt by criminals to try to gain access to your personal information, including bank account numbers.
An IRS spokesperson says they’ve been swamped with reports from people who have received similar emails in recent days.
