(Spirit Lake)– A dedication ceremony will be held Friday for a Blue Star Highway Memorial in Spirit Lake. The marker is located near the flags at the Highways 9 & 71 intersection. The ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 am and will include members of the Spirit Lake VFW Post 4514 and American Legion Timpe Post 123 along with Mayor Bruce Keenan and other dignitaries.
A second Blue Star Memorial in Spirit Lake is located at Memorial Park.
The Blue Star program honors all men and women that serve in the U.S. Armed Services. Iowa is the only state that has “Blue Star Counties”, in which every community within the county has a Blue Star Memorial. Iowa now has four such counties, including Clay county. Local organizers are hoping to make Dickinson the fifth Blue Star County in Iowa.
