(Spirit Lake)– Local authorities report no major incidents as a result of Saturday’s blizzard and whiteout conditions.
While most people heeded the warnings and stayed off the roads, others did not…only to find themselves getting stuck in deep drifts. Even police officers found themselves getting hung up in some cases.
Road crews worked through the day Sunday getting roads re-opened. As of this (Monday) morning, all major highways in the region are open once again, including Interstate 90 across southern Minnesota, which had been shut down Saturday due to extremely poor visibility.
There are still some narrow cuts on county roads, where crews will continue today (Monday) to widen. Several schools in the area posted late starts as a result.
More snow is in the forecast for the middle of the week.
Saturday’s storm dumped about seven inches of the white stuff on the Iowa Great Lakes. Northwest wind gusting to 50 mph whipped it into a frenzy, creating drifts in open area several feet deep.
