(Okoboji)-Birding on the Green is back for the season. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Birding on the Green Program will get underway on May 2 with the Dickinson County Conservation Board.
Environmental Education Coordinator Bryanna Kuhlman says, the program is in partnership with Brooks Golf Club. “Birding on the Green has been a long-running program that we partner with Brooks Golf Course to help them keep their Audubon Certification. Along with that certification, they need to manage their golf course in a certain way to make sure they’re offering good restoration and good quality habitat, but they also have to do a bird count every year, and so the Nature Center has partnered with Brooks to help them offer that bird count in the summer.”
She adds that the program will run through early September. “This year we are offering it on May 2, June 6, July 11, August 1 and September 12. On those days, we will meet at the club house, we will jump into golf carts and we will drive around the golf course and we will stop at different sites, and we just take a bird count, specifically a bird species count, is what we do. We try to see how many species are there throughout the year. So, May 2nd helps us to get our migratory birds that are starting to come down, and then our September 12th one helps us to get them as they are migrating back south.”
Participants should meet at 7 am at Brooks Golf Course on the designated days.
