Big Spirit Spillway Running For First Time In Several Years

April 10, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Orleans)– Another sign of improved water levels on the Iowa Great Lakes: the spillway on the south shore of Big Spirit Lake is running once again, for the first time in several years.

Information from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) shows that as of this (Mon.) morning, the gauge at Marble Beach showed Big Spirit was at 14.4 feet, which is 3 inches over the level of the spillway.

In comparison, it’s still a little more than a foot below the ordinary high-water mark which is 15.15 feet.
