(Milford)– If you were told a crow was seen in Milford you’d probably think nothing of it, as crows are pretty common around here. However, this isn’t just your run of the mill crow.
This crow, which has a band on it, is part of a research project some students at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake are involved with. The program is headed up by Professor Doug Robinson. He tells KUOO news they received a report of the crow, known as “C.W.” being spotted Tuesday by several people near Florence Park in Milford.
Robinson says students in his wildlife program banded the birds during their breeding season. He says “C.W.” was tagged as a nestling at a location near the Storm Lake Wal-Mart store.
He says the work they’re doing with the tagged birds involves assessing their health and other characteristics in respect to their survival and conditions that may affect their survival. Robinson says their research will serve as an important tool when it comes to reintroducing certain species to specific areas.
Robinson says this is the second report so far this season they’ve received of a bird with one of their tags being spotted. The other came in early March or late February. It was bird that was tagged in Alta and was spotted in Randolph, Kansas…some 300 miles from Storm Lake as the crow flies.
Robinson urges anyone who sees a bird with orange or bright pink tags to contact him at (712) 749-2294.
