(Spirit Lake)– Authorities are putting out a special warning to area businesses about a new credit card scam making the rounds.
Spirit Lake police say they’ve had several reports of stores in the area getting phone calls from someone purporting to be from the headquarters of that particular store checking on pre-paid credit cards. The caller informs the store clerk to give them numbers of the cards and names of the cardholders.
In one case, police say a clerk fell for it and gave out the information. The store later had to contact credit card issuers to cancel any charge that may have accrued as a result. Card holders are also being advised to keep a close eye on their statements for any suspicious charges.
Police say any stores getting such a call should treat it as a scam and contact law enforcement.
Area Chambers of Commerce are being alerted of the matter.
