(Emmetsburg)—Authorities are alerting the public to what they say could be a potential scam involving a giveaway of alarm systems.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says it’s had atleast one report of a person receiving a call stating the resident was in a high crime area and therefore qualified for a free alarm system. The resident was advised to press 1 to accept the free system or press 2 to have their name removed from the list. Officials say you should simply hang up if you get such a call. They say there have been instances in the past where people were charged fees by pressing certain numbers.
They say anytime someone offers you something for free that it should send up a flag.
Any suspicious calls should be reported to local law enforcement.
