Authorities Release Additional Details In Double Fatality Crash Near Superior

(Superior)– The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office has released additional details into a collision Wednesday evening that claimed the lives of a Spencer couple.

Authorities say 71-year-old Marie Petersen of Spencer was driving a 2005 Ford Focus southbound on 310th Avenue, or County Road N-14 when she lost control on the ice-covered road. The vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound 2009 Peterbilt Semi tractor/trailer driven by 55-year-old Kevin Graven of Rippey, Iowa.

Petersen and a passenger in her vehicle, 72-year-old Duane Petersen of Spencer, were both killed in the crash. Graven wasn’t hurt.

Damage to the car was estimated at $6,900 while the semi sustained an estimated $3,500 in damage.

Authorities say the crash is still under investigation.

It took place around 7:00 p.m.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Superior Fire and Rescue, the Lakes Area Extrication unit, Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance and paramedics and Jennings Tow and Repair.
