Ash Tree Removal Continues In Spencer As Emerald Ash Borer Takes A Toll

June 08, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– More ash trees are coming down in Spencer as the city continues to battle emerald ash borer. Bob Fullhart, the city’s Parks and Recreation Director told the city council earlier this week removal efforts have now shifted to the area of East 8th Street in Spencer…

“All of the people with actually standing dead ash trees that we have over there, all of those people have been notified. There’s a few coming down East 8th Street that we’re going to be doing at the same time. We’re really going to put the focus on where we really have some of those standing dead trees and then working on some of those existing ash trees around there.”

Brian Mohr, Director of Golf Operations at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course says emerald ash borer has also had a significant impact there…

“A count that I was at a couple of weeks ago, we’re about 50 trees right now that are pretty much history on the golf course.”

He says about 30 smaller ash trees were removed Monday.

Mohr says he’s working on a long range plan to replace the trees.
