Arson Ruled As Cause Of House Fire

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A Spencer woman has been charged with arson in connection with a blaze Sunday that damaged a home in Spencer.

Spencer police and the Spencer and Dickens Fire Departments were called to 209 West Park Street in Spencer shortly after noon. Upon arriving firefighters found flames coming out of first floor windows on the east side of the house and the south front window. The siding on a neighboring house to the east was also melting and catching fire.

Firefighters quickly attacked the blaze and managed to contain it to the living room, with heavy smoke damage throughout the house.

No one was hurt.

The house was occupied by Ashley Handy and owned by Brenda Heilstedt.

Upon investigating, authorities determined the cause was arson, and that it started in the first floor living room.

Heilstedt was charged with first degree arson, a class “B” felony, and was booked into the Clay county jail.
