Arnolds Park City Council Discusses Hwy 71 Safety Concerns

November 16, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Meeting in special session this (Thurs.) afternoon, the Arnolds Park City Council discussed some safety concerns over the re-design of Highway 71 through a portion of that city. Councilman Matt Richter says he’s especially concerned over an area at the Emerald Hills Golf Course where under a new design, traffic will be funneled from four lanes to three…

“The city is just concerned about the safety. Emerald Hills is a vibrant golf course, it’s very busy, and where the funnel is currently located someone leaving Emerald Hills making a left-hand turn, we’re just not sure about the safety about that. Dakin and the D.O.T have been great to work with and we’re looking forward to working with them to find a positive solution.”

Richter says there has also been concern expressed by Police Chief Al Krueger regarding the stoplights at the Arnolds Park Amusement Park intersection…

“It almost looks like there’s two lanes turning right and possibly two lanes turning left, and Al did talk to the D.O.T before the meeting and they’re looking into it and again we’re looking for another positive solution there.”

Regarding the funnel at Emerald Hills, Richter says it was the city’s understanding originally it was going to be half between the golf course and 202nd street.
