Area Producers Taking Advantage Of The Break In The Weather

June 12, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Area farmers have been taking advantage of the drier weather recently to get caught up on planting and fieldwork. Jim Nesseth is with Extended Ag Services of Lakefield…

“We’re getting some soybeans planted that hadn’t been planted yet and a lot of spraying being done and a lot of hay was put up. It was really busy and we’re getting some things done but we’re still going to have some prevented planted acres I think in soybeans. We had some in corn, but some re-planting done on soybeans where we had some water standing and we just had a lot of these side hills leaking water yet so we’ve got some real thin spots in some of these areas, so some re-planting being done there. The high winds from last Thursday, we had some beans cut off there so that also caused some re-planting. But overall we’re making progress. We’ll get this spraying done and some side dressing done with some nitrogen. We’re starting to shape some things up just a little bit.”

Nesseth says the condition of most of the corn that’s up is less than ideal…

“I think we’re less than 50 percent good or excellent at this point in time. We’ve just got some thinner stands and some uneven corn, and then we’ve got a lot of corn that’s probably lacking a little bit of nitrogen and sulfur right now.”

He says soybeans, for the most part, are looking pretty good.
