(Lakefield, Mn.)– Timely rains, heat and humidity have combined to create ideal growing conditions for area corn and soybean crops. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says corn is already tasseling to the east of us and will be reaching that stage in other locations in coming days…
“When you kind of calculate that with tasseling in mid-July, we’re right on target as far as maturity, and you usually have 50 to 60 days until black layer on the corn and I think potentially we’ve got a pretty good looking crop facing us if we get a couple of more timely rains in this growing season.”
Nesseth says soil moisture profiles in most areas are full right now…
“You know if we have a two or three week dry spell here, right here going through pollination, I mean I think we’ve got the subsoil to carry us and so that should work really quite nicely so I’m kind of excited about that, that we’ve got that extra capacity in our soil, in terms of subsoil moisture and I think going through this critical time of pollination, you know, that just means I think more bushels for us potentially next fall.”
Nesseth says most of the corn that was bent in high winds with some severe thunderstorms a couple of weeks ago in some areas has recovered nicely.
He adds producers may want to consider applying a fungicide to soybeans right now with the moisture and humidity that’s out there.
