Area Cities Closely Watching Bills In Iowa Legislature

February 08, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– Area cities are keeping close tabs on some bills in the Iowa Legislature that could impact their funding streams. Estherville City Administrator Penny Clayton told the city council there Monday there’s one she’s especially worried about…

“The most significant one is the change to local option sales tax. The city funds a lot of very worthwhile programs, both on the community betterment side of things which is stuff like the facade and business improvement grant that you just saw, but also there’s a section in there that is reserved for general fund support. We typically use that for ammortization for vehicles at the Police Department; we have some fire vehicles payments in there for their pumper trucks, the same with streets and park and rec. If those items are suddenly, if that money is suddenly unavailable, all of those dollars need to come then out of the general fund that is already squeezed.”

Clayton says she plans to travel to Des Moines Friday to meet with staff with the Iowa League of Cities. She also hopes to meet with legislators on the matter.
