(Spirit Lake)– Area banks are making the public aware of a new e-mail scam that’s making the rounds.
Many people in the area have reported receiving e-mails recently purported to be from the FDIC. The e-mail claims that the bank you have opened your account with is on its list of banks that are failing and that the agency is taking control of its assets. It then says you should click on a link to what supposedly is the FDIC website. That link though, is bogus.
The fake website prompts you to enter sensitive information, including account numbers and other personal information.
Officials say it’s a phishing scam–or an attempt by scammers to obtain personal information, including account numbers.
If you get such an e-mail officials say you should simply disregard it or delete it.
The FDIC does not send out such notices via e-mail.
