APO Fire-Rescue Responds To Early Morning Call

December 05, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire-Rescue had an early morning call. Chief Chris Yungbluth says they were called to a home at 10 Karita Street in Arnolds Park a little before 4:00 am this (Thursday) morning after getting a report of smoke in the residence…

“When we arrived on scene we began an investigation, there was just a light haze of smoke that we found in the structure. Through investigative processes we determined that it was most likely a furnace problem issue, so we shut the furnace down and the family will be able to stay there. They’ve got some supplemental heat sources to use temporarily until they can get service in to take care of the furnace.”

Yungbluth says it’s a reminder to have your furnace inspected on a regular basis by a professional…

“You know every fall you should have service come in or if you’re able to do it yourself and have the education to do it, make sure you’re going through your furnaces before you get ’em fired up in the fall and in the winter time. That just helps to take care of problems especially when we get into the really cold weather like we’ve kind of turned to the last couple weeks, here.”

He adds it’s important also to have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home and to make sure they’re working properly…

“I know that we’ve responded to a lot of close calls where they didn’t have them and then we’ve responded to some houses where they did have them, got the early alert and were able to get out without any concerns. Very important to have carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in the home. In fact that’s what alerted the family to the problem tonight was their smoke detectors.”

Firefighters were on the scene about an hour and-a-half. There were no reports of any injuries.
