Another Reminder Of Iowa’s First Day Hikes Coming Up This Thursday, January 1st, 2026

December 30, 2025

(Undated)– Another reminder of the first day hikes that will be taking place at state parks throughout Iowa Thursday.

The initiative from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources encourages everyone to get out and enjoy the amenities of state parks in their area, perhaps making it a New Year’s Resolution to get out and exercise more frequently while being surrounded by the great outdoors.

Locally, a first day hike will be held on the Barney Peterson Interpretive Trail at Gull Point State Park on the west side of West Lake Okoboji. The trail is about a mile and-a-half long and the hike is self-guided. Parking is available at the parking lot adjacent to the lodge at Gull Point. Participants should dress for the weather.
