Air Quality Alert Issued For SW Minn. Due To Canadian Wildfire Smoke

June 15, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued an air quality alert for most of southwest Minnesota due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. It is in effect until 6:00 am Friday (June 16th).

The MPCA says the Air Quality Index, or AQI, is expected to reach the orange category, meaning the air is unhealthy for those suffering from lung disease such as asthma, heart disease and children and older adults.

The MPCA everyone should limit prolonged or heavy exertion and that activities that contribute to air pollution, such as outdoor burning and use of residential wood burning devices, should be avoided.

They say it’s also a good idea to keep windows closed to prevent smoke from getting indoors.
