Ag Official: This Past Weekend’s Rains Should Be Enough To Get Corn Through Rest of The Season

August 11, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– This past weekend’s rains came at a crucial time for corn and soybean crops. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says it will push the corn through the rest of the growing season…

“And I think the corn crop has got enough to really kind of be made. I think it’s really going to be a very good corn crop and soybeans have really improved. I think, you know, another rain in a week or two will really kind of make that crop. But overall just a real blessing and everybody’s pretty happy about it.”

Nesseth says there is some growing concern, however, with soybean aphids. He says there are some isolated areas that have now reached the threshold for treatment…

“It’s 250 aphids per plant on 80 percent of the plants in the field that has to be infested. So that’s quite a heavy infestation. And then when you reach the threshold level you really have about five to seven days to get it treated before there’s any economic damage or yield loss in fields. So the point is we don’t have to rush the gun.”

Nesseth says it’s a double edged sword when it comes to treatment, as that can also kill natural predators of aphids.
