Ag Expert: Cool Down Is A Good Thing For Crops, Provided We Don’t Get Frost

September 03, 2025

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Provided we can keep the frost away, the much cooler weather is coming at a perfect time as corn and soybean crops start reaching maturity. That word from Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield…

“You know we weren’t behind schedule at all with this crop development so that’s all good, so we’re kind of right on schedule. Then when you just kind of stretch out this time period right now where you get that crop is still alive and nutrients are still flowing into those kernels and in those pods and the seeds, so it can really add some test weight, some quality, I think, and potentially some yield. We really like to see this, you know, where that plant just doesn’t get shut down real quick because of high temperatures or drought or those types of things. This is really ideal for the crop.”

Nesseth says some corn is being cut for silage and if that’s any indication, corn yields could set records this fall…

“It’s starting to dry down pretty good, you know, getting in that 70, 75 percent, some is a little bit wetter than that but yeah, there’s some tonnage there in that easily 25 to 30 ton above that and again some of these field appraisals on the corn, you know, look really good. It looks to me like we might have a record crop.”

Weather permitting, Nesseth predicts some soybeans could be coming out in the next two to three weeks.
