(Wahpeton)– The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office has released additional details into an accident early this (Wed.) morning that’s closed down a portion of Highway 86 on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.
Authorities say 26-year-old Michael Tirevold of Spirit Lake was helping pull another vehicle out of the ditch that didn’t have its lights on.
The Sheriff’s Office says a southbound semi loaded with turkeys then came upon the scene. The driver, 67-year-old Jerald Steuck of Ida Grove, couldn’t see the vehicle. He swerved to avoid it, causing the semi trailer to go into the ditch. It then tipped onto its side, blocking the road.
Steuck was treated on the scene for minor injuries. He declined transport to a hospital.
Authorities say the driver of the vehicle that was being pulled out of the ditch fled the scene. There’s no information regarding that vehicle or its occupants.
Damage to the semi, trailer and turkeys was estimated at 80-thousand dollars.
The incident took place shortly before 3:00 a.m.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Spirit Lake, Milford and Okoboji Police Departments, Iowa State Patrol, Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance, and the Milford and Spirit Lake fire departments.
Highway 86 near Lakeside Lab was closed all morning (Wed.) while crews worked to clean up the mess and upright the semi. The road was reopened around 1:00 p.m.
