Accidental Shooting Injures Two

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)—Emmet county authorities are investigating what they say was an accidental shooting early yesterday (Tues.) afternoon at Cheever Lake southwest of Estherville.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says 19-year-old Sierrah Rivera and 18-year-old Dylan Petersen, both of Estherville, had been shooting a .22 caliber rifle. Deputies say Rivera slipped and fell while holding the loaded rifle, which discharged striking Petersen in the left bicep. Rivera also injured her left arm during the fall. Both Petersen and Rivera were taken by private vehicle to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville where they were treated and released.

Authorities were called to the scene shortly after 1:00 p.m.
