A Set Of Stoplights In Downtown Estherville Could Be On The Way Out

March 19, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening discussed the possibility of removing some stoplights at the intersection of 2nd Avenue North and 6th Street in the city’s downtown area. City Administrator Penny Clayton says they’ve become obsolete…

“It is working with 1980’s technology in the control box and if we want to upgrade that to a new controller and new traffic signal, we’re looking at about $40,000 and we thought that may not be the best use of funding as it relates to an area that doesn’t have, you know, 600 kids a day at the middle school there, like we previously had. It may not be warranted any more.”

The operator of a nearby daycare facility expressed concern over the possible removal of the stoplights…

“The traffic going past, coming down 6th Street, is already very, very fast. We struggle with it a lot. We have kids leaving the daycare. It’s always a big concern if a kid would get away from a parent when they’re out there. The cars just come down 6th Street and they don’t slow down. Taking that stoplight out is just going to be even more go and less of a hindrance when slowing down preparing to stop for the stoplight. I would like to see, personally, a four way stop at the head start.”

The council took no action on the matter following some additional discussion. They instead referred it back to the Streets and Alleys Committee for a formal recommendation.
