(Estherville)– The Estherville Police Department is mourning the loss of its retired canine, Max II. In a Facebook post, the department says Max recently passed away due to complications from a stroke.
Max II was a member of the Estherville Police Department from 2011 until his retirement in 2019. Sergeant Matt Reineke of the Estherville Police Department was Max’s handler. He and his family continued to provide a home for Max until his passing.
Max II was cited for a number of accomplishments including locating a pound of methamphetamine during a traffic stop; tracking an escaped inmate and locating him; and recovering two firearms that had been discarded and hidden when the individuals fled a crime scene on foot.
Pepper, the current Estherville police canine, was purchased through donations from the community and is also assigned to Sergeant Reineke.
