(Milford)– A musical celebration of the Women’s Suffrage Movement is coming to the Iowa Great Lakes. Jessica Schable of Okoboji Performing Arts says the program is titled “We’ve Come A Long Way, Ladies”. She says the interactive program features Audrey Johnson, a classically trained opera singer…
“It’s a really cool program that combines music from the time period from which that was happening. It combines story telling, costumes, costume changes, she has images that she projects to kind of help her tell her story, and she just walks us through the women’s suffrage movement through music and narratives. It’s a really great program. We run through all of the music. I get to play the piano for her. So it’s a really great program. She’s actually already here. She’s been here all week and we’ve been working with some students in the area as well.”
Schable says the program will be presented this Friday, May 12th, at First Lutheran Church in Milford, with a student’s performance Saturday at the Okoboji High School Auditorium…
“The Friday night program is geared more toward mature audiences. I just say that because she gets a little more into the darker side of some of the suffrage movement as far as the imprisonment of the women and some of that kind of stuff. But the program on Saturday is a really cool program because it’s a lot of similar music but it’s geared more toward younger audiences and so on Friday afternoon we’ve invited some area students to our rehearsal on Friday from 3:30 until 4:30 at the Okoboji High School Auditorium. They get to come and do a songwriting exercise with Audrey, and then that song can be performed in the Saturday’s performance by those kids, so they get to perform alongside her in the performance. We’ve invited some students but if there are students in the area who here this who think wow, that’s something I’d really like to participate in, we would love to have them. Kind of probably upper elementary and middle school age are the ages of kids that we’re looking for for that, and then the program that they get to present their song that they write on Friday afternoon will happen on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm at the Okoboji High School Auditorium.”
The performances are open to the public. A free will donation will be taken to help support Okoboji Performing Arts’ future programming.
