A Portion Of A Dickinson County Road Is Temporarily Closed For Gravel Mining

(Spirit Lake)– A portion of a Dickinson county road has been temporarily closed to traffic due to gravel minining operations. The Board of Supervisors last week approved the closure of the 1100 block of 230th Street near the Westport gravel pit and West Port Park. County Engineer Cole Budach says the closure is due to safety concerns…

“Hagedorn’s is out there right now and they’re crushing gravel. We obviously need that gravel for those gravel roads. They’ve pumped down the Westport on the east side to better access the gravel deposit there. They’re hauling the gravel that they’re mining out, going through their crusher and they’re hauling it to what we call the Morphet Pit which is approximately a half mile east of where their crusher is, and they’re running up and down that road with articulated dump trucks, so we want to make sure that is closed off to the public.”

Budach says the road will reopen once the gravel mining operations are complete. He says that could take upwards of two months.

He estimates some 25,000 to 75,000 tons of gravel will be mined from the site, depending upon the quality.
