A Close Call When Vehicle Falls Through The Ice Under Hwy. 71 Causeway Bridge

February 05, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– Five men are being credited for their heroics when a vehicle went through the ice Saturday under the Highway 71 causeway bridge between East and West Lake Okoboji.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says an 83-year-old man was driving a Jeep under the bridge when it broke through the ice. Authorities say five men who were in the area at the time, Joe Salmon and Corey McConnell, both of Spirit Lake, Kody Harrelson of Nevada, Cody Chester of Estherville and Chris Parks of Hawarden jumped into action and pulled the man and his dog out of the vehicle and brought them to safety.

The driver was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare to be checked over and was said to be doing well. The dog was dried off and was also said to be doing well.

The vehicle was removed today Sunday.

Authorities are again highly urging everyone to stay out of that area. Two ATV’s went through the ice in the same spot the Thursday and Saturday of Winter Games. No one was hurt in either of those incidents.

Officials say the ice under bridges is never safe. They add that there’s a current under the Highway 71 causeway bridge which increases the danger.
