8th Annual Sportsman’s Tiki Ride to be held August 6

August 04, 2022 Becky Thoreson

A portion of Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake will be closed on Saturday morning as cyclists assemble for the Tiki Ride. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The 8th Annual Sportsman’s Tiki Ride will be held on Saturday.
Organizer Dave Tryon says about 1,000 riders are expected for the event, which will start by Sportsman’s and The Venue in Downtown Spirit Lake. “We start at Sportsman’s a 9 am. We shut down the whole road, from the top of Hill Avenue all the way down to Highway 71, we’ll close down the road. We’ll have a stage out front and we’ll talk about the Tiki Ride and all the fun stuff you get along the way. About 9:15, we’ll leave with a Police Escort and Tractor Escort around Big Spirit Lake, and then come back for our lunch around 10:30 to 12:30, and then at 12:30, we head out on the backside of Hy-Vee, and then all the way out to the west side of West Lake Okoboji, and we’re actually having the grand finale opening of that new bike trail on that day, so that’s kind of exciting, with all the money we’ve raised over the years. Then we’re going to go around and stop at many stops along the way. Lots of exciting stuff planned, we’re looking forward to it, and I hope everybody registers.”

He notes that that proceeds from the event benefit the Dickinson County Trails. “Thanks to Erin Reed, she’s done an incredible job in the Lakes Area of putting in a lot of these new trails. I think last year we donated $18,000, and then previous years, quite a bit of money, too. So, we like doing it. It’s kind of a fun ride for everybody, not a race, just a fun, casual ride.”
