(Estherville)– Some changes could be in store for traffic flow on a busy street in Estherville near Demoney Elementary School and the High School football field.

The city council Monday evening approved the first reading of a proposed ordinance revision that would result in South 17th Street from 1st Avenue South to 3rd Avenue south becoming one-way traffic. City Administrator Penny Clayton says school officials made the request to accommodate the upcoming stadium improvement project…

“And so they’re trying to do what they can to improve pedestrian safety. It gets a little crazy at the school before and after school so the thought is if we can keep the traffic moving in the same direction we may have better flow of the traffic given the fact there’s going to be construction equipment moving about and storing materials there. And then the idea is, monitor this, see how it goes, and maybe make this a permanent transition once the complex is complete. So for right now we would propose that we do it from about April through the end of the school year.”

The council voted 5-0 to approve the first reading of the proposed revision. It will come back to the council for further consideration at upcoming meetings.
