5 MPH Limit On All Dickinson County Lakes Continues, But There Is An Exception

June 21, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Emergency Management Commission met this (Fri.) afternoon and voted to continue with the 5 mph speed limit on all lakes in Dickinson county, but they did vote eight to two to allow an exemption for dock service providers and marinas provided their vessels are properly marked and have an amber light attached to them. They will also still be required to follow speed and distance laws and must idle to the middle of the lake before being allowed to resume normal speed. The exemption will be in place for two weeks, however the commission will meet once again at noon June 28th to review it. It came after commission members heard from marina representatives who said they have been swamped with requests from people wanting to get their boats off the lakes…

“I fielded tons of phone calls this morning, upwards of 50 to 60 phone calls this morning for us to come get their boats. At 5 mph I simply do not have the capacity to help them and that’s why we’re looking for this. We’re looking to self police, we’re not looking to exceed or be ridiculous in any way. We’re simply just trying to help avoid more property damage.”

A motion that also would have exempted sailboats from the 5 mph rule failed. The commission also voted unanimously to send a letter to Governor Kim Reynolds urging her to address the hold up on the state level in getting the needed permits for the construction of a bridge at the Lower Gar Outlet.
