(Spirit Lake)– There was some exciting news at Monday’s Spirit Lake School Board meeting regarding a sizable donation that’s been made to construct a new park in the vicinity of the little league fields. It was reported that a four million dollar donation has been secured by developer Lee Seeman from the Dorothy B. Davis Foundation for the project, which will include pergolas, unique play elements, benches, and other amenities, with viewing areas for the softball and baseball diamonds. Superintendent Dr. David Smith…
“If you look around our facilities, we just had so many people who have impacted them in such a positive way with very few dollars from the district having to be put forward, and this is just a great example of the Seeman gift which a four million dollar gift that’s going to be an unbelievable addition to our youth Little League, our community park concept that we’ve kicked off. We’re so excited and fortunate to live here in Spirit Lake, Iowa.”
Dr. Smith says the project will be separate from another one by the Spirit Lake Youth Athletic Association which has plans to re-build the current diamonds…
“Some things will be going next spring early, but I think a lot of it will have to wait until after the youth softball, baseball season is done. But, you know, it takes a lot of time to get the materials, get things ordered, get things organized and we hope that next summer we can have a big summer and put things in place.”
Smith adds fundraising for some other amenities will also be getting underway…
“But there’s some other things. They’re trying to raise additional dollars to do some other amenities out there, and, you know, people are trying to make our district and our little community park better, we’ll cheer with them and cheer behind them and hope that they can succeed and find us some more dollars and we’re always willing to make it better.”
A plaza highlighting various accomplishments and honoring outstanding alumni of the Spirit Lake Community Schools will also be part of the project.
