(Milford)– An informational meeting detailing the various committees and volunteers that will be needed as Milford begins its preparations for being the first overnight stop on this year’s RAGBRAI route was held Tuesday evening. Mayor Steve Anderson says a number of logistical needs are starting to be addressed…
“We’re still working on the green spaces, housing, those types of items. Along with that goes sanitation, so wherever the campgrounds are do we have showers capability, do we have sewer capabilities, those things. Working on parking areas for the support vehicles that come, so we’ve got a housing committee and a grounds committee that is working on those items. They’re going to be reaching out to the property owners, they’ve already been doing some of that. Trying to use as much of the public space as we can to facilitate those things as well. That’s kind of the big hurdle right now, and then getting some of these committees going that can deal with the specialties like vendors and entertainment and those things.”
Anderson says there are a number of ways for people to find out about the various committees and how to volunteer…
“If they go to the city’s website is one way. Right at the top of the banner there’s the RAGBRAI logo for this year and you can click on there or you can scroll down and you can leave your name and email address and it will send the information right to the RAGBRAI Committee, and there’s different things you can select on what you’re interested in. There is a Milford RAGBRAI Facebook page. You can go on there, that link is on that Facebook page. That’s where we’ll be putting a lot of the information out as we gather it as things are happening.“
Anderson adds the city council at their next meeting will consider temporarily relaxing certain ordinances during RAGBRAI to help accommodate things such as vendors, food trucks, tent camping and parking of RV’s.
Anderson says as of now they’ve been told to expect anywhere between 15,000 and 25,000 people in Milford the night of July 20th. He says all of the riders will be in Milford no later than 6:00 pm that evening and will be ushered out the next morning by the Iowa State Patrol, which will have 10 troopers specifically assigned to RAGBRAI. Anderson says they do not yet know the route RAGBRAI will take into Milford or the route they’ll be taking when they leave the next day.
