(Spencer)– The city of Spencer continues to work on a couple of projects to address a shortage of housing in the community. Adam Syverson, the city’s Planning Director, says one of the things they’ve been working on is an incentive program…
“A draft for the housing/developer incentive program has been presented to the SEDC and is moving forward. The SEDC also has reviewed engineering proposals for housing subdivision in tandem with that incentive program. Been working on the Accessory Dwelling Unit report and data to be presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission this month on code language to assist in curbing the current housing stock shortage.”
Syverson says progress also continues with another program to put up houses on previously neglected properties in the city, known as the “in-fill” program…
“This will be the sixth residential infill project within the last 12 months, which is a tremendous stride from previous years. Along with this project, staff has kind of been monitoring other dilapidated and derelict or vacant properties to kind of move the housing stock forward at the pace and at the operation staff can to increase the housing stock in Spencer.”
Regarding the incentive program, City Manager Dan Gifford says one of the projects being targeted would put an emphasize on duplex-type structures. He says the program will likely be going to the city council soon for official consideration.
