(Sibley)– A special event Thursday at the Sibley-Ocheyedan High School will showcase STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics projects by students. Science teacher Mike Wedge encourages the public to attend…
“It’s basically a track meet format where community members can come and actively participate in some STEM activities. There’s also competitions, so at our elementary and high school levels we had class competitions. I know the 5th grade did a rubber band car, and so all the kids in 5th grade did a rubber band car and the top three get to compete at expo on the local level, of course, to win some prizes donated by local businesses. And we have our Math Bee. It’s a wide variety of STEM competitions for community members to watch kids participate in and compete in, and we also have a human hover craft where people can hop on a hover craft and ride it down the gym floor. We have a variety of come and as you go type of challenge that parents can participate in with their kids in building a keva tower. So it’s just a opportunity to elevate and celebrate our STEM projects in school but also get the community involved and let them see what we do in STEM.”
Thursday’s event will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the Sibley-Ocheyedan High School and is free to the public…
“There is a meal that people can purchase and the funds go to the S-O Education Foundation which of course the money gets placed right back into the classrooms. People of all ages can come. Last year we had grandparents come with their grandkids, we had parents of course, older siblings, younger siblings, any age. Again, it kind of showcases our STEM investments. A few years ago we purchased an imagination playground, more commonly called big blue blocks. Back in the day we probably built a fort with chairs and blankets, but now kids can build a castle, house, kind of with these life-size lego pieces.”
The event will be come-and-go.
