(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors today (Tues.) approved a contract with Motorola for new 911 radios compatible with the state of Iowa’s interoperable communications system. In addition to each law enforcement agency and the Sheriff’s Office, each school system in the county will also be tied into the new system with radios.

Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret told the supervisors today (Tues.) the total contract cost has increased from the $5.5 million originally projected to $6.13 million. A motion by the supervisors to enter into a contract at that amount was tied with a contingency. Supervisor Tim Fairchild…

“I mean we are essentially agreeing to do something we do not have the funds to do at this time in our budget.”

Fairchild said he wanted the contingency attached should some kind of complication surface during budget time. Of the $6.13 million, $1 million will come from the county’s carryover fund with $1.85 million coming from the county’s funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA. The remainder is to be funded by an increase in property taxes.
