Milford Council Hears Request To Vacate Street; Discusses Clean-Up Days

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A portion of seventh street near the Okoboji Elementary School in Estherville may soon be permanently off limits to traffic. Even though the street is barricaded during the school day, Superintendent Bob Miller told the Milford city council Monday some driver’s are going around the barricade, presenting a safety issue…especially when buses are loading and unloading in that area. In addition, Miller says additional space will be needed for the playground once construction starts on a planned expansion of the school. Miller is requesting seventh Street be closed between “M” and “N” Avenues. The council will set a date for a public hearing on the matter at its next regular meeting.

In other business, the Milford city council Monday set April 28th and 29th as the dates for this year’s clean-up days. City Administrator Matt Skaret told the council there will be a few new requirements this year, including one requiring large items be broken down. He added the city reserves the right not to pick up certain items, including those that are hazardous. And he reminds residents they can purchase tags at any time at city hall, not just during clean-up days, to have appliances picked up.

The council also Monday held the third reading and adopted an amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance allowing for a moratorium of up to a year on the construction of wind turbines to give the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission time to come up with recommendations on the issue.

The council also referred to committee a proposal to put pop machines in the Community Building. Police Chief Vernon Flack recommended against putting a machine in the old city hall. In addition, the city’s Parks Board recommended machines not be placed in parks, citing concern over competing with a concession stand and possible vandalism.
