(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday reviewed newly revised plans for the construction of a new city hall and major renovations to the police station. The projects have a total estimated cost of $3.19 million dollars.
While plans have been pretty much finalized now, the only question that remains is the amount of the bond issue referendum to be decided upon by voters. City Administrator Mark Stevens told the council he still needs some time to put that number together. Among other things, he says possible options that could be funded outside of the bond funds need to be identified. Stevens said he hopes to have that information to the council in another month or so.
On somewhat of a related note, the council approved vacating a street and alley through some land at the site of the school’s former administrative building. The school board earlier this week voted to sell some land in that area to a developer who plans to build some townhouses there. The council also voted to authorize the execution of a quit claim deed. In exchange, the school has agreed to let the city use the former administrative building to house its offices during any construction of a new city hall. Stevens told the council that will greatly reduce any temporary relocation costs that would be associated with the city hall project.
Development of the school property hinges on that area being rezoned to allow for multi-family housing.
