(Spirit Lake)– Local healthcare officials are reminding those involved in strenuous outdoor activities to take additional precautions during the extreme heat and humidity. They say those involved in such activities should be sure to drink plenty of water and to take frequent breaks.
There are three primary heat-related disorders: heat exhaustion, heat stroke and heat cramps.
Heat exhaustion is caused by prolonged exposure to heat that results in excessive loss of fluids from heavy sweating. This depletes the body of essential electrolytes, which hinders blood circulation and affects the ability of the brain to function. Symptoms include fatigue, low blood pressure and sometimes the victim will collapse. The victim should drink cool, slightly salty beverages and move immediately to a cool place and lie flat with your head lower than the rest of your body.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when a person can no longer sweat enough to lower body temperature. A heat stroke victim appears confused, disoriented and flushed and has hot, dry skin. The victim’s heart rate also increases dramatically. Immediate medical treatment is required.
Heat cramps occur during physical exertion in extreme heat. They are caused by excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes, resulting in severe muscle spasms due to heavy sweating. The victim should drink beverages or eat foods containing salt.
Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake has opened its waiting areas and dining room to those in the public that do not have air conditioning and need a break from the heat and humidity.
