Thornton wins at Jackson; Dover first at Park Jefferson
JACKSON - Ricky Thornton Jr. took advantage of a late mistake to claim his first career World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory Saturday night at Jackson Motorplex.
Thornton, from Chandler, Ariz., took the lead from Chad Simpson (Mount Vernon, Iowa) on the 53rd lap of the 60-lap $20,000-to-win Double Down Invitational.
"This is huge," Thornton let out in victory lane. "I’ve always wanted to run a Late Model and Todd and Vicky Burns have made this dream come true for me. I swear I have never gotten nervous in a car, but that was for sure the most nervous I have ever been those final seven laps."
Friday's opening night winner, Ricky Weiss (Headingley, Manitoba, Canada) would finish second, Brandon Sheppard (New Berlin, Ill.) third, Simpson fourth and Chris Madden (Gray Court, S.C.) fifth.
Next weekend's scheduled USAC event at Jackson Motorplex has been postponed.
The next event currently on the Jackson schedule is the Midwest Power Series/MSTS Sprint Cars on Friday, June 5.
Jack Dover (Springfield, Neb.) won the MSTS with Nebraska 360s feature Saturday night at Park Jefferson International Speedway.
Chris Martin (Ankeny) was second, with Jason Martin (Lincoln) third, Kaleb Johnson (Sioux Falls) fourth and Lee Grosz (Watertown, S.D.) fifth.
Brandon Halverson (Jackson) finished sixth in his heat, which placed him in one of the B features.
The All Star Circuit of Champions and IRA Outlaw Sprint Series will both run at Park Jefferson next Friday and Saturday.
