Strong 2nd Half Propels Spirit Lake To Homecoming Win
Spirit Lake overcame a halftime deficit and beat Algona 49-21 in Class 3A District 1 Football. Spirit Lake led 7-0 after one quarter thanks to a five yard Ben Newman touchdown run. After a Gavin Harms interception, the Indians made it 13-0 with a 47 yard touchdown catch by Frankie Ramos. The two point conversion attempt was no good. Algona then responded with a 13 yard touchdown catch by Wyatt Wegener and a two yard touchdown run by Jacob Durant to lead 14-13 at halftime. The second half was all Spirit Lake. Alex Van Dyke had touchdown catches of 13 yards and 49 yards. Kyler Reick found pay dirt from 11 yards out. Nick Christensen had a 60 yard touchdown run, while Harms had a 21 yard touchdown run. Drew Hickerson and Spencer Newman each picked up interceptions for the Indians in the second half. Algona's lone second half score came from a 72 yard touchdown catch by Skyler Groen. For Spirit Lake, Christensen finished 15-for-17 with three touchdown passes and an interception. He also rushed 10 times for 117 yards and a rushing touchdown. Van Dyke had three catches for 85 yards. Spirit Lake averaged over five yards per carry as a team. The Indians are 4-1 (2-1 District). They travel to Humboldt next Friday. Hear the game on KUOO.
