Spirit Lake's season ends in regional final
A big second half propelled Sioux Center to the Girls Class 3A State Tournament as the Warriors defeated Spirit Lake 55-25 in the Class 3A Region 1 Final in Sheldon on Saturday night. It was a low scoring first half with Spirit Lake leading 8-5 after one quarter and 14-13 at halftime. The Indians would lead by as much as five in the first half. In the third quarter, Sioux Center's offense and pressure defense came to life, holding Spirit Lake to just seven points while racking up 21 points of their own. The Warriors led 34-21 entering the final period. The Indians got as close as 11 twice, but Sioux Center outscored the Indians by 14 the rest of the way to get the win. Jordyn Van Maanen and Lexi Toering each had 14 points to lead the Warriors, who improve to 20-4. They move onto the state tournament. Spirit Lake was led by Joie Veldman's eight points. The Indians season closes out at 16-8. They say goodbye to seniors Veldman, Bailee Newman, and Paige Petersen.
